Why this solar ad worked immediately after launch

Another ad breakdown today — this time with SMS.

When we launched these campaigns, eight leads came in on day one.
And Abdi rang me and laughed down the phone for a solid 30 seconds.

That tells you pretty much everything you need to know.

This video breaks down one of SMS’s strongest ads:

  • Why we visit multiple sites in one shoot day

  • Why location callouts matter more than people think

  • How conversational delivery outperforms “polished” scripts

  • Why technical depth doesn’t hurt conversion

  • And how we structure shoots to create huge creative volume from one day

It’s a good example of how preparation, efficiency, and clarity turn into ads that work immediately — not after months of testing.

For context, this video was originally recorded on 5 December 2024, views & strategies may have changed since.

Video transcript

Abdi from SMS — this is one of his ads.

In fact, really funny one: when we launched the campaigns, we got eight leads in within the first day. And Abdi literally called me up and just laughed over the phone for 30 seconds straight with no context. So safe to say he was a very happy man when we launched these campaigns.

Now, we’re going to talk about one of his most successful ads and why it’s so successful, and what we’re doing, and what we’re going to do next, and all of that good stuff.

So — bang. Right. Not even a second in. I’m going to pause it and yap for a second about why we’ve done the things in a certain way.

When we come to shoot with you, we do not visit just your office on one site. That is ridiculous. What are we going to do for the rest of the day?

We go and we come to your office. We come to an in-progress installation — so we schedule that in. We don’t rush it. We make sure we schedule an in-progress install so we can get some really nice B-roll, behind the scenes. And then we go to as many as humanly possible completed installation sites.

The max we’ve ever done is nine. I challenge anyone here that is watching this video to arrange for us to visit more than nine sites within one day. You’ve got to figure out the logistics. You’ve got to figure out we’ve got to drive between. We always skip lunch to be honest. The videographers hate us for that. But I’m really sorry guys — we just got to cram as much content as possible.

Latest we’ve stayed is 7:00 p.m. I’m not setting that as the expectation. Please don’t make me drive over from Devon to Manchester from 7:00 p.m. But we do like to make you go the extra mile for the clients.

But if you can find more than nine sites then I don’t know — I’ll do something crazy with your setup for you or something.

The reason we visit so many sites is because we get a huge variety of footage. We’ve hired out a professional videographer for the whole day. We don’t just turn up on an iPhone anymore. We’ve hired out this videographer — we’re going to make sure that you get the absolute most from it.

And it’s going to look like you’ve done five, six, seven, eight, or even nine shoots. And you’re getting all of that value in one filming day, and only one day of your time — which is super valuable as well.

Now, the reason I say this now when we’re only one second into the ad is because if we’re visiting so many sites, we need to be super, super efficient with the time that we have on the day.

So what quite often happens is I’ll whiz around with our videographer and actually arrive to the next site before you and actually get the drone up in the air before you’ve even arrived, right?

And we have this set up with our videographer all the time — and literally he’s getting the drone ready as we’re driving to the next site. Drone’s already in the air when you pull up with the van.

That’s exactly what’s happened with this in this case with SMS and we’ve actually got some footage of them coming out of the van because the drone shots most of the time we can get them when you’re not even there.

So we may as well use up the time, right? We’re not going to just sit there and not do anything. We may as well get you some footage. And that’s why I want to call that out within the first second of this ad — that’s basically what’s happened.

Ad footage:

“Hey guys, Abdushe here from SMS — going to talk you through an installation that we’ve just done over here in Charlton, Manchester.”

So location immediately: we’ve called out who is actually presenting the ad, what company they’re from, and the location at which the job has been completed — in this case, Charlton, Manchester.

Don’t be afraid to call out a very small specific location, okay? Because one: it’s not going to rule out people that are outside of that location. Two: people that are inside of that location are going to be even more bought in than they were before. So there’s no reason not to.

“It’s a 16 panel system. It’s an east-west split — as you know the sun rises in the east and it sets in the west — because of the shape of the customer’s roof. We had the ability to maximize generation on a system by having panels on both sides.”

We always love to do — and the editors love creating — these little transitions that are completely custom and bespoke in your branding.

“Customer here has got a young family. So we needed to make sure that the system, the battery solution — the solution — was right for them as well.”

So calling out the fact that the customer has a young family: again, it’s not going to rule people out, but people that do have a young family are suddenly really perked up and listening. They’re really inclined to actually listen to what Abdi has to say about the system that was installed specifically with consideration for the fact there is a young family in the property.

“As you can see here, this is an EcoFlow 6 kW hybrid inverter, 10 kW battery. EcoFlow is one of our favorite products to install because we trust them so much. We have so much belief in them — and also some of the features that they’ve got. They come with a 15-year warranty. As you can imagine, the standard average warranty in the industry is 10 years. These exceed it as well.

They’re built and designed to go outside. They’ve got built-in AI features. They’ve got built-in Octopus Intelligent features as well, which customers absolutely love. But they come with a cool monitor system as well — that you can have inside your house. So you can see what you’re generating, what you’re using as well.

But the best thing about EcoFlow, what we found, is the customer service and how quickly they are to deal with if there is ever any issues. The response time is really, really, really impressive.

One of the best features of the EcoFlow battery is actually the chemistry formula of it as well. If the battery was inside your house, if there was ever any issues inside the house and there was a fire or anything like that, with the fire suppress technology inside the EcoFlow, it would disable the battery and protect it. So it wouldn’t worsen the situation at all. This is why these batteries are super, super, super safe.”

Anything like that where he’s describing something that we can show more visually — we’ll get the B-roll afterwards or during, and we’ll be able to showcase that on screen while he’s talking through that.

This segment here is really conversational. And we always, always encourage the person on camera to be conversational — because it should feel like you’re just having a chat with the viewer.

It shouldn’t feel like you’re having a chat with hundreds of people. It should feel like you’re having a chat with just that one person that is watching at any one time. And he does a really good job of that.

“If this is something down your road and you want top quality — we’re not talking about no budget brands — we’re talking about top quality, value for your money’s worth, and you want something that’s sleek, easy to use — it comes with a 10-inch tablet inside your house which shows you everything, just keeps everything so simple — then click the link below. Give us a call or do a survey and we can give you a quote.”

Now this is a really good opportunity to show the office footage. A lot of people ask, like, what are we going to film at the office? Maybe you don’t have a super glamorous office space, but we still go because we can get some really lovely team shots that showcase that you’re a really put-together outfit.

And this one — SMS — actually work out of like a Regis kind of serviced office space. So really lucky here because we got to use all of the kind of shared workspaces as well to get some really lovely polished footage.

Then finally, a little call to action that gives someone time to actually take action once they’ve digested the footage and information that they’ve received. And we always do a nice little logo animation at the end there as well.

Cool. So if you would like ads created like this for you, we handle the entire process end to end and we have a fantastic track record — then definitely get in touch.

I mean SMS for example here: I think they generated 150 leads inside their first month, sold a good portion of them as well. I don’t know the latest figures, but I know significant Powerwall sales are coming through because most of their ads are actually focused around the Powerwalls because that’s one of their top products.

So yeah — if you’d like that for your business, then there should be a button somewhere above: book an appointment, or just drop me a message on LinkedIn and we’ll sort something out. We’ll see how we can help you.

Brilliant. Catch you in the next one.
